How much to feed a pug?

Im getting a pug tomorrow and its 8 weeks old. I know a lot of pugs get very fat because they over eat. How much should i feed him? I will take him for a walk around the block everyday for some excersize but i really dont want him to get fat…

Look at the bag of food, and it will tell you how much to feed. You may have to adjust it according to his lifestyle though. If I knew the brand of food, and the dog’s weight, I could tell you exactly how much.

just a warning, be very careful with your pug, like watch who gets around him and make sure he doesn’t get loose, because one good blow to the head and his eyes can pop out, disgusting I know… I’ve seen a pug at the animal shelter whos eye had popped out :( . it’s very sad, so just make sure he doesn’t get loose or run away or anything, and make sure no one in the area hits him. But i think they’re cute dogs, just read the bag and watch his weight, if he gets over weight then put him on a diet

Depends how much he weighs? The average weight of a pug is 13-18 pounds, so I would feed him a 1/3-a little over 1/3 of a cup 3 times a day. If he seems to gaunt, thin, skinny, scrawny etc. then I would reccomend calling a vet or trying to feed him 1/2 a cup 3 times a day. Be creative!! See what works for your dog!! You will see if he gains 2 pounds or loses 2 pounds! just keep him in the 13-16 pound range. 13-16 is probably the best

Ask your breeder how much he is being fed. You should be getting all that information when you pick him up from the breeder. You’ll be taking him to the vet soon as well. The vet can help answer your concerns.

oh man is that a very good question.. im thinkin we must feed ours WAY too much, she is HUGE. lol our vet said she was so obese, that if she were a human on the beach, she’d need to wear a moomoo.

sorry i really am not sure how much to feed him though, i just thought it was rather funny. you better go by what the vet says tho cause you sure dont want her turning out like my porker of a pug lol.

With small breed dogs, such as Pugs, you should watch how much you feed them. With puppies, you should feed them about
1/4 cup of dry dog food twice a day. As they get older, around
6 months-old, give them 1/3 cup twice a day. When they are about 1 year-old, you can either cut back to feeding him once a day, about
1/2 to 2/3 cup or so, or if your dog is a light eater, you may want to just continue the twice a day feedings of 1/3 cup.
I’ve had small breed dogs for over 20 years, and mine do better on twice a day feedings. That way they don’t get so hungry during the day.
Also, give your dog healthy treats, like Canidae Chicken and Turkey Snap-Bits crackers, or whatever cracker you choose to give your dog. Just don’t give them a lot of treats everyday because some crackers and treats for dogs have a lot of fat. Or you can give them raw or steamed small pieces of vegetables and fruit, such as carrots, broccoli, green beans, cauliflower, peeled apples, blueberries, bananas, etc.. They are healthy, low in fat and dogs love them.
Do not give them grapes, raisins or onions. These are toxic to dogs.
Best of luck to you and your Pug puppy. He will be adorable.
Hope I helped.
